Countdown to Summer: Essential Foot Care Tips for the Warmer Days

Summer is just around the corner, bringing with it sun-kissed days and endless adventures. As the temperatures rise, our feet bear the brunt of the heat, making it essential to give them the care they deserve. As a podiatrist, I see a lot of foot conditions that make their appearance during the warmer months of Summer; some of which include pesky fungal nail and skin infections, blisters, heat rashes, ingrown nails, warts, cracked heels and foot pain! Let me walk you through a few things that you can do to keep your feet healthy in the heat!

Why Does Foot Care in the Summer Matter?

Summer brings about heat and dryness. With an increase in temperature, viruses, bacteria and fungi thrive! This means that we become more prone to catching fungal and viral skin and nail infections from beaches, public pools and communal showers.

Ingrown nails become common due to incorrect nail cutting technique which can cause infection and pain. Caring for your feet in the warmer weather will generally ensure your feet stay clear from infections, aches, pains and ingrowns!

Hydration Is Key

Just like the rest of your body, your feet need hydration to stay healthy. Remaining hydrated by drinking plenty of water keeps the skin healthy. Additionally, in the scorching summer heat, it's crucial to keep your feet moisturized to prevent dryness and cracking. Opt for a quality foot cream or lotion that contains ingredients containing urea lock in moisture and keep your skin soft and supple.

Choose the Right Footwear

Secra Slides (Chic!) The Archie Slides

While sandals and flip-flops may be the go-to summer footwear, not all are created equal when it comes to foot health. Look for sandals or thongs with proper arch support and cushioning to prevent foot fatigue and pain. Prioritize comfort and functionality over style to ensure your feet are well-supported during all your summer adventures. My favourite for the upcoming summer are the archie slides and their sister brand Secra!!

Practice Good Hygiene

During the summer, our feet are often exposed to sweat and bacteria, making them more susceptible to issues like athlete's foot.

  • Keep your feet clean and dry by washing them daily with mild soap and water.

  • Don't forget to dry them thoroughly, especially between the toes, to avoid fungal infections.

  • Wear shoes at all times in communal shared bathrooms, swimming pools and sauna's

Sun Protection for Your Feet

While we are vigilant about applying sunscreen to most parts of our body, our feet are often overlooked. Remember to protect your feet from harmful UV rays by applying sunscreen, especially if you are going to be wearing open-toed shoes. The sun's UV rays are harmful and melanomas and skin cancers on the foot are very common!
