Ingrown Nail Treatment and Surgery


Ingrown toenails are a common condition in which the corner or side of a toenail grows into the soft flesh. The result is pain, inflamed skin, swelling and, sometimes, an infection. Ingrown toenails usually affect the big toe.
WHAT CAUSES AN INGROWN NAIL?
There may be many causes to ingrown toe nails, some of which include but are not limited to:

Tight fitting footwear placing pressure on the toe

Trauma to the nail

Improper nail cutting technique

Thickened skin around the nail

Swelling and oedema

Pregnancy

Genetic history of ingrown nails

Certain nail conditions such as fungal nails may predispose to ingrown nails

Certain medications may prompt ingrown nails
WHAT are the symptoms?
Some of the symptoms of an ingrown nail may include pain around the affected nail, inflammation, swelling and in some cases, infection between the skin and the nail bed.
HOW IS AN INGROWN TREATED?
Ingrown nails are treated by removal of the ingrown by the treating podiatrist. If the ingrown nail is too deep and/or severe to be removed, a procedure called a "Partial Nail Avulsion" is performed whereby the ingrown is removed surgically.
IS THERE A PERMANENT SOLUTION?
A Partial Nail Avulsion is a surgical procedure that is often a permanent solution to ingrown toe nails. The podiatrist will assess your ingrown nail and its suitability for the procedure
