Get Your Feet Summer-Ready: A Podiatrist’s Guide

With summer just around the corner, it’s time to bring out the sandals and enjoy the sunshine. But after months of being tucked away in socks and closed shoes, our feet don’t always feel (or look) their best. Dry heels, nail problems, and sore feet are all too common this time of year. The good news? With a little preparation and the right podiatry care, we can help you feel most comfortable in your bare feet! At Hip to Sole Podiatry, we're all about preventative and proactive care!

Smooth and Hydrate Your Heels

ree

  • Dry, cracked heels are one of the most common issues we see as podiatrists when the weather warms up. A good foot cream, especially one with urea, can work wonders to soften and repair rough skin.

  • For deeper cracks, professional podiatry treatment is the safest way to get them smooth and healthy again. Our deluxe medical grade pedicure is often what patients request just before the Summer, and it is often recommended on a regular 8-12 week basis (depending on your skin and nail type) to keep skin supple and healthy!

Nail Care Matters

ree

Your toenails will be on show in summer, so it’s worth giving them some extra care. Always trim nails straight across rather than down the sides, as this helps prevent ingrown toenails.

  • If your nails are thick, discoloured, or painful, it may be a sign of fungal infection or other nail conditions such as onycholysis or even nail trauma that a podiatrist can treat safely and effectively with our medical grade pedicures. Healthy nails don’t just look better, they feel better too. Utilising our nourishing Bondi Medi Pedi nail oil in the Summer can also help keep your nail bed healthy and clear.

Stay Clear of Infections

ree

  • Warm weather, pools, and communal showers can make fungal infections more common in summer.

  • Athlete’s foot (tinea) is especially easy to pick up in these places. To reduce your risk, keep your feet dry (especially between the toes), wear breathable shoes, and don’t forget thongs in public showers or change rooms. A quick spritz of antifungal spray in your shoes can also help keep things fresh and prevent you from catching fungal skin and nail infections.

Don’t Forget Sunscreen

ree
  • Most people remember to apply sunscreen to their face and arms, but the tops of the feet are often forgotten. This area is particularly prone to sunburn and long-term sun damage.

  • Make a habit of applying sunscreen (SPF 50+) to your feet whenever you’re outdoors in sandals or barefoot. It’s a simple step that goes a long way in protecting your skin, especially in the Australian Heat.

Choose Footwear That Loves Your Feet

ree
  • Flat thongs and flimsy sandals may seem convenient, but they don’t give your feet the support they need. They can cause blisters, arch pain, and even long-term strain.

  • When choosing summer shoes, look for sandals with a cushioned sole, good arch support, and straps that keep your foot secure.

  • The archie slides or Secra slides are often a good choice!

Step Into Summer with Confidence

  • Getting your feet ready for summer isn’t just about appearance—it’s about keeping them healthy, pain-free, and comfortable. By looking after your skin, nails, and footwear, you can enjoy the season without worrying about foot problems.

  • At Hip to Sole Podiatry, we can help with cracked heels, nail conditions, and all aspects of foot care to get you summer-ready.
